Robert Irving III completes a distinguished lineage of post-bop pianists/composers who collaborated with the legendary Miles Davis. Irving’s composition “Space” inspired Davis’ comeback in 1979. He soon evolved into the roles of Davis’ producer, musical director and film composer to become the jazz icon’s longest collaborator (1979-1988). As a musician and as producer of five Grammy award nominated projects, Irving worked closely with music greats Sting, Wayne Shorter, Ramsey Lewis, Billy Joel, Terri Lyne Carrington, Nancy Wilson, Diane Reeves, David Murray, Regina Carter, Wallace Roney, John Scofield, Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington Jr., Pharaoh Sanders, Buster Williams, Roy Ayers, Donald Bryd and many others.

Irving returns to the Jazz Showcase stage with an exceptional new quintet that, notably, features Wallace Roney Jr. on trumpet who is a trailblazer at age 21; carrying the legacy of his mother, pianist Geri Allen and his legendary namesake dad. Irving’s rhythm section features Chicago rising star, young Jeremiah Collier on drums with Emma Dayhuff on acoustic bass. Irving will debut new music along with his signature ‘de-arrangement’ of selections from the post bop jazz cannon.

Howard Reich wrote of Irving’s 2016 Jazz Showcase engagement, “Irving’s cadenza helped explain why Miles Davis must have been drawn to the man’s work, the beauty of sound enriched by the complexity of his harmonies and startling quality of his tone clusters.”
