For more than 30 years, Antonio Hart has been an active and influential voice on the international jazz scene. As a bandleader, he has released nine recordings, including Here I Stand, which received a Grammy nomination in 1997. As a sideman, he has appeared on more than 100 recordings, including Grammy-winning projects with Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dave Holland.
Throughout his career, Hart has performed and recorded with many of jazz’s most celebrated figures, including Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderley, Roy Hargrove, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Nancy Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Max Roach, Slide Hampton, James Moody, and Jimmy Heath, among many others.
Hart earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Berklee College of Music and a master’s degree from Queens College.
Formed in 1993 after his departure from Roy Hargrove’s band, the Antonio Hart Quintet has remained active for over three decades, touring extensively around the world. Most recently, the group completed a tour of China after a ten-year hiatus. In 2011, Hart was invited to perform at the White House for President Barack Obama’s State Dinner honoring the Chinese delegation, representing America’s rich jazz tradition.
For the past 26 years, Hart has served as a professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, where he equips students with the tools needed for professional success. He continues to evolve as both a saxophonist and composer.
Beyond music, Hart is part owner of Element Wing Tsun. He has practiced this martial art for over 20 years and is a Certified Sifu through the City Wing Tsun Athletic Association.
